You surely know that editing is much more than simply catching typos and grammatical errors. That said, I published most of my books without the assistance of an editor. The one for which I paid for editing has not performed any better than the others.

For me the biggest hurdle, one which you haven't mentioned here, is marketing. There are lots of organisations offering marketing assistance out there, they are all expensive and the results often disappointing.
