This freedom can only be temporary, as history shows. The population of the human race on this planet has more than tripled in my lifetime. That is a consequence of 'the great enrichment'. The planet's resources can support more of us so more of us exist; not so much from increased birth rate as from reduced death rate, at all ages, because of our ability to eliminate, or successfully treat, disease and disability.

People over sixty already outnumber children under five.

In the EU 5.9% of the population is over 80.
