Is it not also the case that most pharmaceuticals are synthetic copies of naturally occurring substances? After all, fossil fuels are nothing more than highly compressed former life forms. All the substances that can be extracted and synthesised from them can be extracted from living plants, at leat in theory. When extracting them from fossils becomes too expensive then the alternative will become economically viable.
