Excellent piece, Heather. Years ago, in the UK, the parents of a child with cerebral palsy set up a charity with the aim of raising funds and making life better for such children and their families. They called it 'The Spastics Society'. For several years my wife was manager of one of a chain of charity shops that were operated as a key part of their fund raising. There was an annual lottery organized by a group of celebrities who styled themselves the 'Stars Organization for Spastics'. All of that was back in the 1970s and '80s. The time came when they realized that the word 'spastic' was being used to disrespect people who did not have the condition so they changed the name. The organization is now called 'Scope'.
